Fill out the form to receive a FREE download of the This Is Us Conference 2020 Whitepaper. It’s a document where we explore the learnings and information that we took from the event that was held virtually on the 20th and 21st of October. The two-day event explored a huge range of topics relating to diversity and inclusion in the workplace for Women, BAME, and LGBTQ+ people.

This report aims to set out just some of what we took away from the conference, with the hope that readers can learn from it and be proactive in advancing the diversity and inclusion conversation in their own workplaces. We hope that you will enjoy this worthwhile document and the interesting insights and information that it includes! After all, diversity and inclusion is a business basic, and we must all do our part to help advance it in the world around us.

Day 1 – LGBTQ+ Programme – Tuesday 20 October 2020
09:00 – 09:30 hrs
Registration and Online Networking
10:00-10:40 hrs
Role of the Trade Union
#MeToo has been effective in focusing the eyes of the world on the problem of sexual harassment at work. But the voices of LGBT people haven’t been heard clearly enough in discussions around this issue. We wanted to change this and foreground LGBT people’s voices and experiences in the ongoing debate and search for solutions. We therefore conducted the first survey of its kind on this issue.
10:40-11:40 hrs
Preventing Trans Discrimination at Work
(inc Q & A)

Katie will tell the very personal story of her long walk to womanhood, with passion and with humour.  After telling her extraordinary story she will answer ANY questions from the audience – no holds barred!  She will then outline why trans-awareness training is needed and discuss two recent discrimination tribunals highlighting what can go wrong when D&I best practice is not followed.  Delegates will then be asked to discuss what action can be taken to prevent trans discrimination in the workplace, to create some actionable points for them to take back to their organisations.

11:40-11:50 hrs
11:50 – 12:35 hrs
Panel Discussion – Inclusive Language
The language we use about people and issues can have a powerful impact. Language used about sexual orientation and gender identity continues to develop as there has been increased visibility, awareness and discussion in recent years. To support and include people it is important to be sensitive to social change. There can be confusion caused by an increase in the diversity of terms and language used. This panel discussion sets out to provide suggestions about current use of language and what organisations can do to help train staff in the correct use of language within an LGBTQ+ perspective.
12:35 – 13:05 hrs
Lunch Break
13:05-14:05 hrs
Networks & Alliances – The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
Want to know how to set up an LGBT+ network or workplace community? Learn about the good, the bad and the downright terrible from someone who has first-hand experience. In this session you will get a better understanding of the steps that you and your organisation can take to establish your community. There is no one size fits all approach but insight and experiences from others can help you understand the challenges you may face on your journey. The topics and processes covered have been designed to be applicable for large or small organisations, this session is for everyone with plenty of discussion and chances to ask questions.
14:05-15:00 hrs
Unconference (including breakouts into smaller groups)

This session will provide the audience to shape the conversation around LGBTQ+ in the workplace and will provide a platform for open discussion.

The first generation of migrants faced barriers when finding employment in the UK, this inaugurated ethnic entrepreneurs. Learning from previous experiences, this reconsideration will co-create strategies the present generation can use to tell something new.
